Mech Laboratories

Laboratories

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is equipped with 12 well-established laboratories that support academic learning, research, and innovation. Each laboratory is designed to provide students with comprehensive hands-on experience in fundamental and advanced areas of mechanical engineering.

The laboratories are outfitted with modern machineries, 3D Printers, 3D Scanner, precision instruments, testing equipment, and simulation software, enabling students to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. These facilities cover core areas such as Thermal Engineering, Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machinery, Manufacturing, Design, Metrology, Instrumentation Control Systems, and Materials Testing, as well as emerging domains like CAD/CAM and Additive Manufacturing. The department ensures that students gain industry-relevant skills and are well-prepared for careers in manufacturing, design, research, and industrial innovation.

The department hosts the following laboratories:

Engineering Workshop Lab

The workshop is designed to impart fundamental skills in various manufacturing and fabrication processes, enabling students to understand the basics of material handling and component production.

Fuels and Lubricants Lab

The Fuels and Lubricants Lab focuses on analyzing the properties and performance of fuels and lubricating oils. Equipped with instruments for testing viscosity, flash and fire points, and calorific value, the lab helps students and researchers evaluate fuel quality, efficiency, and lubrication behavior for improved engine and industrial applications.

Material Science and Mechanics of Solids Lab

This laboratory helps students observe heat treatment studies, microstructures of metals and alloys, and study their mechanical properties such as tensile strength, hardness, impact resistance, and fatigue behavior. It also enables them to understand how composition, processing, and structure affect material performance while learning standard testing procedures and safety practices.

Production Technology Lab

The Production Technology Lab provides hands-on experience in metal casting, moulding, sheet metal processes, welding, and various machining operations. The lab helps students develop essential skills in process planning, precision manufacturing, and quality control, preparing them for careers in production, design, and manufacturing industries.

Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machinery Lab

This lab enables students to study fluid properties and the performance of hydraulic machines such as turbines, pumps, and flow measurement devices. Experiments help students understand fluid dynamics, energy conversion, and efficiency evaluation of hydraulic systems used in industrial and power applications.

Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery Lab

The lab focuses on analysing the motion and forces in machine elements. It is equipped with gyroscopes, governors, and vibration setups, allowing students to study mechanisms, balancing, and dynamic behaviour of mechanical systems.

Computer Aided Machine Drawing Lab

This laboratory trains students in 2D drafting and 3D modeling using software such as AutoCAD, CATIA, Fusion, and SolidWorks. Students learn to create detailed part drawings, assembly diagrams, and production blueprints in accordance with industry standards.

Metrology and Machine Tools Lab

The Metrology and Machine Tools Lab emphasizes measurement accuracy and precision machining. It includes surface roughness testers, comparators, and tool dynamometers, enabling students to understand tolerances, fits, and surface finish in manufacturing. Students also gain hands-on experience in metal cutting, shaping, milling, drilling, and grinding operations.

Thermal Engineering Lab

This lab provides practical exposure to I.C. engines, compressors, and boilers. Students measure engine performance, heat balance, and efficiency, gaining insight into thermodynamic processes and energy conversion systems.

Heat Transfer Lab

The Heat Transfer Lab focuses on the experimental study of conduction, convection, and radiation. It is equipped with setups for heat exchangers, composite walls, pin-fin apparatus, and emissivity measurement, helping students correlate theoretical principles with practical performance.

Computer Aided Design and Additive Manufacturing Lab

This advanced lab introduces students to 3D modelling, finite element analysis (FEA), and 3D printing technologies. Using software like CATIA, Fusion, and ANSYS, students design, simulate, and fabricate prototypes, fostering innovation and digital manufacturing skills.

Instrumentation Control Systems and Production Drawing Lab

This lab provides training in measurement, data acquisition, and control of mechanical systems using transducers, sensors, and controllers. It also focuses on developing skills in production and assembly drawings, essential for design documentation and industrial applications.
