FAQ About Autonomy
1. Who grants Autonomy?
In case of colleges affiliated to a university and where statutes for grant of autonomy are ready, it is the respective University that finally grants autonomy but only after concurrence from the respective State Government as well as UGC. The State Government has its own powers to grant autonomy directly to Government and Government aided colleges.
2. Shall MLRITM award its own Degrees?
No. Degree will be awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad with a mention of the name MLRITM on the Degree Certificate.
3. Difference between a Deemed University and an Autonomous College
A Deemed University is fully autonomous to the extent of awarding its own Degree. An Autonomous College enjoys academic autonomy alone, while the affiliating University continues to monitor its performance.
4. How will stakeholders know about the Autonomous status?
Autonomous status, once declared, shall be accepted by all stakeholders. The Government of Telangana mentions autonomous status during the First Year admission procedure. Foreign Universities and industries will know through the institute website.
5. Change of status for students and teachers
An autonomous college carries a prestigious image. Autonomy is earned through consistent academic performance, self-governance capability, and quality education.
6. Who checks academic standards after autonomy?
Academic standards are monitored by the Academic Programme Evaluation Committee and the Academic Council. Parameters include question paper quality, academic calendar, attendance, and result transparency.
7. Eligibility for University Medals and Prizes
Students are not eligible for University medals. However, MLRITM has instituted its own awards. Students can participate in university-level sports and cultural events.
8. Convocation
Since the University awards the degree, convocation will be conducted by the University. However, MLRITM will celebrate Graduation Day.
9. Provisional Degree Certificate
With prior approval from the University, MLRITM can issue provisional certificates since examinations and results are handled by the institute.
10. Impact of Autonomy on Placements
Autonomy improves employability through continuous assessment, industry-oriented curriculum, and skill development, leading to better placement opportunities.
11. Internal and External Assessment Ratio
Currently, assessment consists of 70% external and 30% internal. As autonomy matures, internal assessment may be increased.
12. Complete Internal Assessment
Yes. The institute has the freedom to decide the proportion of internal and external assessment.
13. Why Credit Based Grade System?
The credit-based grading system is a globally accepted standard that enhances the international acceptability of graduates.
14. What is a Credit Based Grade System?
Credits are assigned based on lecture and lab hours. Grades are awarded either through absolute or relative grading systems and converted into grade points used to calculate SGPA and CGPA.
15. Credit Norms per Semester
Credit norms are defined by UGC or AICTE, usually around 25 credits per semester.
16. Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA)
SGPA is the weighted average of grade points obtained in all courses registered during a semester.
17. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)
CGPA reflects the overall academic performance of a student across all semesters.
18. Software for Grade Calculation
Yes. The institute has its own MIS software to calculate SGPA, CGPA, and grades.
19. Role of Teachers in Grade Calculation
Teachers only enter marks. Grade conversion and calculations are handled automatically by the system.
20. Revaluation and Re-Examination
There is no revaluation system. Double valuation is practiced along with makeup exams and a summer term for eligible cases.
21. Syllabus Revision Frequency
Autonomy allows the institute to revise syllabi as frequently as required.
22. Degree Award Criteria
Degree classification is based on CGPA considering all semesters, not just the final year.
23. Statutory Academic Bodies
Governing Body, Academic Council, Examination Committee, and Board of Studies are statutory bodies with mandatory external member participation.
24. Decision Making on Academic Matters
Academic decisions are taken by the Governing Body and Academic Council, with inputs from Boards of Studies.
25. Role of Examination Committee
The committee oversees internal exams, end-semester exams, valuation, tabulation, and grade card preparation.
26. Grievance Redressal Mechanism
The institute has a grievance redressal committee headed by the Dean – Student Affairs and Dean – IQAC.
27. Number of Attempts for Degree
This is defined in the institute’s Rules and Regulations.
28. Result Declaration
Results are reviewed by moderation and examination committees before being published and forwarded to the University.
29. Maintenance of Academic Records
Student academic records are maintained by the Dean – Academics of the autonomous college.
30. Relationship with JNT University
MLRITM continues as an affiliated college, and the University nominates members to academic bodies.
31. Approval for New Courses
Yes. University approval is required, and autonomous colleges generally receive priority.
32. Autonomy for PG and Doctoral Programmes
Yes. PG programmes at MLRITM also enjoy autonomous status.
